Provincial Assembly of the Punjab 1997

 

February 18, 1997 to October 12, 1999

 

This Assembly was constituted as a result of general elections held in February 1997 and its first meeting was summoned on February 18, 19971.

 

The Army took control of the country on October 12, 1999. The Constitution was held in abeyance and the Assemblies were placed under suspension w.e.f. October 12, 1999 through the Proclamation of Emergency by General Pervez Musharraf who assumed the office of Chief Executive of the Country2. The Assemblies remained under suspension till June 20, 2001 when they were finally dissolved3.

 

The Assembly held its last session from August 10, 1999 to August 20, 1999. With 130 sittings over 16 sessions, this Assembly had an active life of 2 years 7 months and 23 days and passed 39 Acts.
