SUMMARY OF PROCEEDINGS OF THE

INAUGURAL SESSION OF THE ASSEMBLY – 2002

      The previous Provincial Assembly of the Punjab was dissolved on 12 October 1999 through Promulgation of Emergency dated 14 October 1999. Fresh general elections to the National Assembly and the Provincial Assemblies were held on 10 October 2002 under Elections Order 2002. Before the general elections the seats of Provincial Assembly of Punjab were increased from 248 to 371 which included 297 general seats, 66 seats reserved for women and 8 seats reserved for non-Muslims. The elections to the general seats were held on the basis of joint electorate for Muslims and non-Muslims and single member territorial constituency. Elections to the seats reserved for women and non-Muslims were held through proportional representation system of political parties’ lists of the candidates on the basis of the total number of general seats secured by each political party in the Provincial Assembly.

 

Seating Arrangements for additional Members

         

      As many as 353 members including all the Members-elected against the 66 seats reserved for women and 8 seats reserved for non-Muslims took oath in this sitting. The total number of women members taking oath was 72, which included 5 women elected against general seats, 66 women against the seats reserved for women and one woman against the seats reserved for non-Muslims. The position of the remaining 18 general seats against which no member took oath in this sitting was as under:-
