SYNOPSIS OF FIFTEENTH PROVINCIAL ASSEMBLY OF THE PUNJAB

 

(2008 – 2013)

April 09, 2008 to March 20, 2013

 

 

 

After dissolution of the previous Assembly on the advice of Chief Minister on November 18, 2007, this Assembly was constituted as a result of general elections held on 18 February 2008. Sardar Dost Muhammad Khan Khosa elected as the Chief Minister on April 12, 2008 and held office till June 06, 2008 and was replaced by Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif on June 08, 2008.

 

 

 

With the decision of Supreme Court of Pakistan on 25 February 2009 declaring Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif disqualified from the Assembly. Due to disqualification the cabinet also stood dissolved and the President of Pakistan imposed Governor Rule in Punjab on 25 February 2009 under article 234 of the Constitution. The Governor rule was, however, lifted on 30 March 2009 and a special session was called for ascertainment of new Chief Minister to be held on 1st April 2009 but on 31 March 2009, the Supreme Court of Pakistan suspended its earlier decision dated 25 February 2009 resulting in restoration of Chief Minister and the Punjab Cabinet.

 

 

 

By 18th Amendment in Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan the days of sittings of Provincial Assemblies were increased from 70 to 100 in a parliamentary year, which became effective in the third parliamentary year i.e. in 2010.

 

 

 

This Assembly completed its tenure of five years and the Governor dissolved it on March 20, 2013. It held its last session on February 26, 2013 with 302 actual sittings and 414 total sittings, over 45 sessions and passed 134 Acts.

 

 

 

The present Provincial Assembly of the Punjab consists of 371 members including 297 general seats, 66 seats reserved for women and 8 seats reserved for non-Muslims.
